Just days after their disappointing Euro 2024 campaign, former England manager Gareth Southgate has announced his resignation.
With the Football Association (FA) appointing Under-21s manager Lee Carsley as caretaker manager.
Carsley surprised fans immediately by calling up new players such as Chelsea winger Noni Madueke , Newcastle United youngster Tino Livramento and Lille midfielder Angel Gomez to the first team for the first time for the Nations League games against Ireland and Finland.
Madueke, Livramento and Gomez have all represented the modern England team at a time when dual citizenship was the norm, and several European powers followed suit by giving their best players dual citizenship a chance.

Meanwhile, Carsley is well acquainted with Madueke, Livramento and Gomez, having work together in the Three Lions’ U21 side that enjoyed success at the 2023 U21 European Championship.
Madueke, Livramento and Gomez have all impressed this season after establishing themselves as key players for the club, with their performances leading to many English fans questioning Carsley’s decision.
Madueke has regular on the right wing for Chelsea at the start of the season and has scored four goals in four games, while Livramento has started three of Newcastle’s right-back games and Gomez has been a regular in Lille’s midfield for the past four years.
The new England era under Carsley got off to a flying start with a 2-0 win away at Ireland on September 7, with the likes of Madueke and Gomez already in action, while Livramento are still waiting for their chances.
The next game, England will be hosting Finland at Wembley Stadium. It will interesting to see how many chances the three new players will have, but one thing is for sure, they have a bright future ahead of them.
